Broom Street Theater seeks script submissions

Broom Street Theater (BST) in Madison, Wisconsin is currently seeking script submissions for its 2014 and 2015 seasons, each of which covers the entire calendar year. Founded in 1969, Broom Street is among the nation’s oldest continuously operating experimental theater companies, primarily producing original works by local playwrights. For further information about the company, please see BST’s website:

Each BST season includes ten (10) shows. BST encourages experimental work that stretches the imagination beyond theatrical norms in terms of story, form, and relationship with audience, to name a few. Preference goes to premieres that have not had full productions elsewhere and to original, experimental renderings of extant works. Submitters are not limited to local playwrights, but the company gives preference to local, state, and Midwest authors.

Submit either a full script or a proposal outlining your premise and a work plan for completing your script. In general, completed scripts are preferred. To assure consideration, proposals must be in writing. Deadline for submissions is April 30, 2013. Follow these instructions:

  • To facilitate blind reviewing, include a cover sheet with your contact information. A cover letter is not required but you may add one if you like.
  • Remove your name from all other pages.
  • Indicate whether the author plans to direct his/her own work. If not, please name a preferred director, keeping in mind that the BST Artistic Director will make the final determination.
  • Submit as a Word file or PDF by April 30 to scripts [at]

PLEASE NOTE: If your piece is accepted, you will be required to sign a contract with specific stipulations. Each production receives a small stipend to partially cover costs of producing the show. Playwrights or directors wishing to see the contract before submitting, please email scripts [at]

If absolutely unable to send an electronic copy, mail a hard copy to:
